On Abortion Legislation

So this happened:

I’m angry. And you should be angry too. Yesterday, Alabama’s legislature passed a bill to ban abortions. Yesterday, a group of white men decided to codify into law the exertion of control on women's (and non-binary individuals’) bodies.

It’s absolutely sickening to think that someone could be raped, and then forced to carry the resultant child. The passage of this legislation tells us that there are still people in this world that want to treat anyone with a uterus as second-class. To deny their rights as human beings with complete bodily autonomy.

The same “pro-life” people that are pushing this legislation through don’t meaningfully engage with the very deadly threat to life semi-automatic rifles present. These same legislators are doing everything in their power to stifle your access to quality, affordable medical treatment.

The Alabama Human Life Protection Act is a farce, as there's so many current human lives that are left out of the picture.

You don’t get to call yourself pro-life if you won’t consider sensible gun control.

You don’t get to call yourself pro-life if you won’t provide proper sex education that will in turn reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies.

You don’t get to call yourself pro-life if you act in bad faith on executing current healthcare laws, or prevent access to proper contraception.

You don’t get to call yourself pro-life if all you do is champion and fetishize the birth of a baby, and do nothing to support that baby after it’s born.

You don’t get to call yourself pro-life if you can’t recognize that abortion bans will not actually stop abortions, but rather make them much less safe.

This legislation out of Alabama is regressive, and all state representatives that follow suit are showing what they truly think of the right of a woman or non-binary individual to choose as they wish with their own body.

I hope each and every one of you supporting this gets voted out of office. I stand in solidarity with all that are affected by these draconian laws. Enough is enough. ✊🏾
